Looking to forge your own career path? Freelancing could be for you!

Freelancing gives you the chance to pursue your passion, without being tied down to a single job. Having the freedom that freelancing brings means that you can work with who you like, where you like and when you like. it also offers you the chance to develop multiple sources of income from several clients. Here at Student Enterprise, we can support you with getting started in your freelancing career.

We have outlined some basic steps we think you need to consider on your journey to becoming a freelancer:

1. Identify if freelancing is for you

The most important step you need to take is deciding if freelancing is right for you. What drives you towards freelancing? There are multiple reasons as to why people choose freelancing, and we recommend taking some time to figure out what your reason would be.

2. Identifying how to find work

One of the most challenging things for a new freelancer is finding enough work to make the approach worthwhile. There are many ways to find work, from referrals and connections to freelance job sites and subcontracting. If you have a skillset that can add value to a business, research the best ways to put yourself in front of these companies and set in place a plan of action for this.

3. Creating a profile & portfolio

As a freelancer, it’s important to have a good profile and portfolio at hand. Think of your portfolio as a CV for work you’ve produced, it’s an opportunity to showcase your skills to potential clients. If you don’t have industry experience, you can include pieces you have worked on whilst at university, or even include mock examples you have created yourself.

4. Figure out your pricing

New freelancers often struggle to decide upon their price points, and it is important to stay flexible depending on the client or scope of work. As a base, decide upon an hourly rate, a project rate and a monthly retainer fee. If you are unsure about where to get these figures from, you can research online about the average price points for your industry or reach out to fellow freelancers for guidance.

5. Start your journey

With the basics being covered in the above bullet points, you should have a solid base to begin your freelancing career. Remember to reassess the individual areas of your business as your experience grows, adding in client testimonials to your profile and revaluating your price points are key as you move forward in freelancing.
